Resources for Raising Conscious Kids: January 2023 Edition
As an agency, Bridgetown Baby is deeply committed to confronting bias within ourselves, building our skills, and creating an inclusive model of care that authentically serves our clients and contributes to culture change. This is work we all can do. It starts with us; it continues with our children - and we are their most important teachers. Each month, we'll be sharing resources for talking with kids about bias, celebrating diversity, and actions our families can take to create a world we all can live in.
Bringing In the New Year brings the traditions of Lunar New Year alive for young readers.
Grace Lin’s lilting story, narrated by the young protagonist, begins with one family’s preparations for their most important holiday of the year. As the book goes on - leading to a bright and joyful three page fold-out depicting the moment that the New Year arrives - the elements of a traditional Chinese New Year are highlighted as the narrator becomes more and more excited (and a little impatient) for the New Year to begin.
Families who celebrate Lunar New Year may find aspects or variants of their own celebrations reflected in this sweet story. For families with different traditions, Lin’s story and engaging illustrations offer a fun window in to a holiday marked by 1.5 billion people in many cultures around the world.
