Thank your Lactation Consultant Today

Join us today in celebrating IBCLC Day! IBCLC (International Board Certified Lactation Consultant) Day was developed to recognize the important role lactation consultants play, and the specialized knowledge each has, that make a difference in the lives of so many families.

Whether a family experiences difficulties with breast- or chest-feeding, or whether a nursing parent is seeking guidance with pumping for a return to the workplace, the nurturing presence of a lactation consultant bring a sense of calm to a challenging time. And the tips, tricks and deep knowledge lactation consultants share can tip the balance from struggle toward a sweet and successful feeding relationship.

Lactation consultants hold a special place in our hearts - especially here at Bridgetown Baby, where half of our team of postpartum doulas are also board certified lactation consultants. This specialization in postpartum+lactation support makes Bridgetown Baby unique among doula agencies in the Portland metro area.

Each of Bridgetown Baby’s IBCLCs also brings a unique perspective to the work they do - today, we’re delighted to recognize and celebrate our IBCLCs for all they bring to Bridgetown Baby families! Learn more about our lactation team below - and learn more about our lactation services here.

I decided to switch careers to become an IBCLC while on maternity leave with my first daughter because I fell in love with being around nursing moms and I knew I wanted to be part of the postpartum experience for the rest of my life.

I imagine being an old lady still sitting next to a new nursing mom providing comfort, love and guidance.

At the same time, I hope that someday we will no longer need IBCLCs because nursing will become our cultural norm again and nursing parents can receive help from their experienced friends and family, as we have done in the past. In the meantime, I think being an IBCLC is truly the best job in the world. Next to being a postpartum doula of course!

I decided to change careers and become an IBCLC after experiencing breastfeeding challenges with my own child. I was struck by how hard it felt when I struggled on my own and then by what a difference it made to have an excellent IBCLC on my side.

I think it’s the perfect career for me because I am equal parts a goal-oriented gal and a super sentimental baby-loving-tree-hugging mama. Breastfeeding tugs at the heartstrings of both of these sides of me. I am passionate about helping families stay healthy and connected!

Every time I watch a baby and parent gaze into each others eyes while connecting through breastfeeding I am filled with so much joy and purpose.

I love being an IBCLC for many reasons. I love being a rock for families during such a raw experience. I love the fascinating biology behind every tidbit of information. I love and honor the trust I receive from families. I love contributing something important to the health and wellbeing of my community. I couldn't ask for much more than that in a career.

Some of my favorite moments of being an IBCLC are the small moments.

When the nursing parent excitedly notices milk dribbling out of their baby’s mouth.

The relief and ease in the nursing parent’s body when we find a position that results in a comfortable latch.

Watching a nursling and their parent gaze into each other’s eyes.

These sweet moments are the ones that stick with me over time.
