Gaining Light: An Astrological Meditation for the Spring Equinox

Spring is nature’s way of saying, “Let’s party!” - Robin Williams

It’s finally that time of the year again, the time for renewal. Spring Equinox is the re-birth point in the cycle of the seasons, and is always marked by the Sun moving into the sign of Aries. In Astrology, we consider this to be the new year because we begin a new cycle at the first degree of the first sign of the zodiac.

The balance between night and day has equalized and we are now gaining light!

I find it helpful to understand certain things about the Spring Equinox to understand what my clients and my children might be experiencing on an individual level.

Here are some things that I’ve recognized about this time.

Understanding the Earth's cycles aligns you more positively with the current energies

It was at the Equinox and the Solstices where we celebrated the Earth, the animals, the Sun and each other.

For many, many, many, years we paid less attention to the calendar and more attention to the moon and the stars and the sun.

In the Spring we begin to be able to see more sunsets, more moon cycles, more stars and constellations - this has a way of reconnecting to ourselves and to each other.

Celebrating the Equinox does not need to happen at the exact time of the Equinox, but you may want to create a ritual to welcome the event. The energy is present for a while. And it is a powerful time to gather your community and you will naturally feel an urge to be more social. It’s a perfect time to start a new group or start a new hobby.

Having even a small nature table that includes an element of inviting in the newness of Spring can be beneficial.

We will notice more External Energies

As we begin to turn towards the sun's external light, it is a time that we are asked to share time and resources with our community and family.

If we tend to be more introverted, or if our children are more introverted, it becomes necessary to set up down time or transition time. If we are more extroverted we may feel like it's non-stop party time which can be exhausting as well.

Kids and adults may need to exert more energy to decrease conflicts.

Time Speeds as the Sun is Re-born

In physics we learn that when anything heats, time speeds up - and when it’s cold, time slows. We are moving towards time speeding, and with that comes the need to be mindful. The wisdom in slowing down and enjoying a cup of tea or coffee before the children wake, or an evening ritual to sit outside for five minutes before going to bed, can offer you a reprieve from everything and everyone moving so darn fast.

Your kids may exhaust you - learn to focus on the positives and draw out more positive experiences.

The best parenting advice that I ever received was from my grandmother who said “A bath is always the answer.”

The best advice that I can give to parents of young children is to give them a spot in your yard to dig. I found this one year when we grew potatoes: my children were ecstatic about the process, and they kept wanting to dig. One morning, before they were up, I buried a bunch of my pretty stones and crystals in the old potato bed. This gave me two weeks of writing time - I’m not kidding. Get creative, stay positive, and get them outside or in the bath tub.

At The Equinox we meet the Bulge

The Earth bulges in the middle due to gravity and rotation. This is called the equatorial bulge. Yup, I said it - the Earth has a bulge. When we are at the Spring equinox, the sun's equator matches the Earth's bulge. It can be a great time for abundance and inner wisdom coming through.

This is the time to start new routines, set intentions and plans into place for Spring and Summer and get some self-care.

Expect growing pains in your family and relationships, as this signifies the natural cycles of evolution and change.

It would be really boring without the bulge of energy that we experience with the seasons.
